Where Does Your Water Come From?
Our water is supplied by three springs just above our community. Rainfall on the slopes of Cape Foulweather filters down through the soil and underlying fractured rock and emerges at the springs. Because this underground water is recharged by rainfall and is not retained in the rock for very long, the amount of water flowing from our springs varies both seasonally and from year to year, depending on the amount of rain that falls on the Cape.
Water from the springs is collected in two concrete reservoirs along Otter Crest Loop (old highway 101). When the reservoirs are full, the extra flow from the springs supplies the creek that flows through the forest and ends in a small waterfall on the Marine Gardens beach.
The reduced flow from our springs at some times of year, particularly in late summer and early fall, is the reason that the district sometimes needs to issue water conservation alerts.
